LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham is used to getting assists on corner kicks.
Now, he can add a goal to that list. Beckham’s whipping corner kick found its way into the back of the net last weekend against Chicago and took home top honors as the AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 17.
Becks sent a low curling ball into the six-yard-box where it skipped through traffic and the legs of Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson. The 66th-minute go-ahead goal turned out to be the game-winner, as the Galaxy took down the Fire at the Home Depot Center and extended their league-leading points total to 39.
Beckham narrowly edged out runner-up Fredy Montero, whose dipping free kick equalized against Portland and helped pace the Sounders to a 3-2 win over their Cascadia rivals. In one of the closest Goal of the Week competitions of the season, Beckham stole the spotlight after a flurry of text votes were sent his way and propelled him to the top spot.
