Canada roster for January camp, friendlies includes Toronto FC teen duo

The Canadian men's national team on Friday released coach John Herdman's roster for their training camp in California this month, calling in a well-rounded squad for a gathering highlighted by friendlies vs. Barbados and Iceland. 

Composed mainly of North-American based players, including 18 from MLS clubs, as well as a few from Europe, the group includes two talented Toronto FC teenagers, Jayden Nelson and Noble Okello, and six first-time call-ups. Les Rouges will train and play at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California, meeting Barbados on Jan. 7 and Jan. 10 before facing Iceland on Jan. 15.

“It’s a great way to start the year with three international matches and the opportunity to work with 26 players, including players who are new to the Men’s National Team or have been on our radar in 2019,” said Herdman in a federation release.

“Outside of the FIFA window, it is a difficult period to assemble players due to club and off-season commitments, but this gives us the opportunity to introduce young players who we have monitored throughout 2019 and have continued to impress at the club or international level.”
