Chicago Fire FC announced on Saturday they have signed Slovakia national team defender Boris SekuliÄ to a three-year contract and acquired him via transfer from GĂłrnik Zabrze in the Ekstraklasa league, Poland's top flight. He will be added to the Fireâs roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa, and will occupy an international roster spot.
SekuliÄ, 28, joins the Fire with an extensive professional career, including 285 first-team appearances across all competitions in Serbia, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Poland. He has been most often used as a right back, according to Transfermarkt, but has played all four positions on a four-man back line.
âBoris is a talented and smart defender that will immediately strengthen our backline,â said Fire head coach Raphael Wicky in a statement. âWe are excited to welcome him to Chicago ahead of the 2020 season.â
After beginning his career in Serbia, SekuliÄ spent eight years in Slovakiaâs premier division, Slovak Super Liga, with KoĆĄice (2011-2015) and Slovan Bratislaca (2015-2018). During his time there, the defender made 183 appearances and won the Slovak Cup in 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2017-18.
In June 2018, SekuliÄ signed with Bulgarian First League side CSKA Sofia (2018-2019) and made 12 appearances before moving on to the Ekstraklasa league and joining GĂłrnik Zabrze, one of the most successful clubs in Polish football, where he appeared 36 times and scored twice.
At the international level, SekuliÄ has earned two caps for Slovakia after obtaining his citizenship in 2017.
