The Houston Dynamo may have just said goodbye to a pair of players, but they also welcomed one back earlier this week.
Erick 'Cubo' Torres returned to Houston on Tuesday after spending the past three weeks with Mexico's Under-23 national team preparing for the Olympics. Torres was named in June to Mexico's preliminary roster for the upcoming tournament, and is hoping to make the final 18-man squad that will compete in Brazil next month.
The 23-year-old forward will now be hoping to strengthen his case for inclusion while playing for the Dynamo. Torres, a Designated Player, could suit up for Houston as soon as Friday, as they visit Orlando City (8 pm ET, UniMás) at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
This season, Torres has started in two of the seven games he has played in for the Dynamo. He has recorded one assist. The former Chivas USA striker, who scored 14 goals in 29 games during the 2014 season, has yet to score in league play since linking up with the Dynamo midway through the 2015 season. He has found his best form in the past year with the Mexico U-23s, netting three goals last fall to help qualify them for the Olympics.
The men's Olympic soccer tournament starts on Aug. 3 and will run through Aug. 20. Teams are required to field a roster of U-23 players (born on or after Jan. 1, 1993), with three overage exceptions.
