Morris is only in his first year as a pro, but the US national team forward is already accustomed to life in the spotlight. He’s gotten plenty of attention this year, causing a mini-maelstrom when he chose to sign with his hometown Sounders in January.
So far, with a few blips along the way, he's lived up to the hype that accompanied his arrival in MLS. The Stanford University product leads Seattle with 10 goals in 28 regular season appearances, including a rookie record five game-winners, but he’s seen plenty of scoring chances go begging as well. If he can become a little cleaner in front of net, there’s no reason that the talented 21-year-old can’t become one of the top strikers in MLS as well as a key contributor with the US.
What the technical staffers say:
"People talk sometimes about him not finishing the chances that he gets, but for a kid his age, to create the number of quality chances he gets is very, very unique."
"He's still a baby from an experience standpoint. He's still growing as a player and a person. I think those are things that are only going to improve as he gets more experience. He definitely had a fringe benefit of being with someone like Sigi, who was a tremendous mentor. The hope is that he has the right people around him. I think one of the biggest questions around him is the situation in Seattle. Does he have the right mentorship or leadership around him without Sigi, and with the other cast of characters in the locker room, to help him grow and mature?"
"I think the biggest challenge he has is the expectations that are placed on him. He has all the attributes that you look for in an attacking player. To me, he has a lot of Brian McBride in him, but with more pace. I think he can roll his sleeves up, fight and compete."
"I think he needs to make a name for himself, to prove that he's a guy who can carry a team. That kind of pressure sometimes doesn't allow players to keep growing, but I think he's a young man who's willing to take that pressure on his shoulders."
