After a brief international pause, the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs chase resumes with Matchday 29 this weekend.

Three must-see matches include Lionel Messi's first game back from his Argentina farewell, LAFC's debut under interim coach Xavi Tamarit and St. Louis CITY SC's continued pursuit of history.

Here's what to know as MLS enters the final full month of regular-season play.

Fresh off tallying 1g/2a during his emotional Argentina national team farewell match, Messi resumes Inter Miami CF's pursuit of becoming the first club to win back-to-back MLS Cup presented by Audi titles since the LA Galaxy in 2011-12.

While the legendary No. 10 remains as elite as ever, producing a league-best 21g/13a as he eyes a historic Landon Donovan MLS MVP three-peat, the Herons haven't been as effective.

Miami are winless in five entering Matchday 29's Walmart Saturday Showdown, including a last-gasp 2-1 defeat at the Columbus Crew in their last match. They'll look for Messi and fellow superstars Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul and Casemiro to deliver a get-right performance in front of their fans at Nu Stadium.

Meanwhile, D.C. United could push closer to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a win.

Led by top scorer Tai Baribo (14 goals), the Black-and-Red are only three points behind ninth-place New York City FC. They're also coming off an encouraging 3-3 draw at Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with summer signing Kimito Nono netting a brace at BC Place.

D.C. will aim to defy the odds yet again, this time at the defending champs.

With just one win in their last 10 matches (1W-4L-5D record), LAFC hit the reset button by parting ways with first-year head coach Marc Dos Santos.

Now, interim manager Xavi Tamarit is tasked with sparking a late-season turnaround, beginning with Saturday's touchline debut against the Whitecaps.

With superstars Son Heung-Min (6g/13a) and Denis Bouanga (14g/8a) back from international duty, BMO Stadium will be rocking as the Black & Gold renew a classic rivalry with the 'Caps that includes an epic 2025 Western Conference Semifinal.

Vancouver won that legendary postseason clash en route to last year's MLS Cup final, thanks in large part to the inspired play of then-newly-arrived Thomas Müller.

The Germany and Bayern Munich legend remains the focal point of the Whitecaps, especially after recently signing a contract extension through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.

After dropping a midweek matchup at Chicago Fire FC, 3-1, Müller (9g/8a), Brian White (17g/2a) & Co. are eyeing another statement win against their Southern California rivals, which could secure their postseason berth in style.

St. Louis have gone 17 league games and 19 all-competition matches undefeated, jumping into second place in the West. They're one game away from tying the MLS record of 20 straight games unbeaten across all competitions (2016 Red Bull New York), while the league-record unbeaten streak sits at 19 games.

This has all unfolded under first-year head coach Yoann Damet, who blends a team-first ethos with star players.

Brazilian striker Rafael Navarro is the main attraction, tallying 5g/1a in his first four starts since arriving in a club-record trade ($12 million) from the Colorado Rapids. Fellow summer DP signing Carlo Holse (3g/2a) and top scorer Simon Becher (9g/5a) further highlight a St. Louis side that's on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since their 2023 MLS expansion season.

The Galaxy, for their part, are focused on returning to the playoffs after missing out last season following their MLS Cup 2024 triumph.

The record six-time league champions enter Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire firmly in the mix, reaching ninth in the West behind a three-game unbeaten run that includes back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Marco Reus (7g/9a) has helped spur the Galaxy's recent run of form, with two goals and an assist over that three-game span. The Borussia Dortmund legend has been aided by joint-top scorer João Klauss (7g/0a), St. Louis CITY's first-ever DP signing who could face his former club for the first time this weekend.
