Sebastián Fernández made quite the statement in his MLS debut last weekend, a debut that included Week 1's AT&T MLS Goal of the Week.
Fernández claimed the initial award of the 2014 season on Friday for his game-winning rocket in the Vancouver Whitecaps' 4-1 rout of the New York Red Bulls. The Uruguayan midfielder's stunning strike, which came in the 49th minute of the match, claimed a little more than 39 percent of the vote.
Mauro Díaz finished in second place for his free-kick magic in FC Dallas' 3-2 triumph against the Montreal Impact, but he fell short of Fernández's top spot by a wide margin.
