Mere days into his Inter Miami CF coaching tenure, Cristian “Kily” González already has a trophy on the line.
It’s a fittingly early reminder of the sky-high demands awaiting González, whose introductory press conference also served as the Herons’ pregame media availability ahead of Wednesday’s 2026 Michelob ULTRA Campeones Cup clash vs. LIGA MX titans Cruz Azul at Nu Stadium (8 pm ET | Apple TV).
“For me, this is the biggest challenge of my life,” González told reporters on Tuesday.
“Even more so knowing the players that I’m going to coach.”
Legends reunited
González, a former Argentina international midfielder who spent a decade playing in Europe, already had close ties to Miami’s star-studded squad before signing with the Herons through June 2028. In particular, a certain Lionel Andrés Messi.
“I adore him. He knows this,” Kily said of his former Albiceleste teammate. “And that makes this moment even more special.”
Add an A-List supporting cast including the likes of fellow 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul, legendary Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez and marquee summer signing Casemiro, and González now oversees a roster that’s been built with one goal in mind: win trophies.
“This club, for what it represents, for having the No. 1 [player] in the world, for its infrastructure, for everything you see, is one of the biggest in the world,” said Kily.
“Without a doubt.”
Trophy standard
So far, the Herons have backed up the hype with three titles: Leagues Cup 2023, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and MLS Cup 2025 presented by Audi.
González can immediately help the Herons add a fourth to their trophy case with a win on Wednesday.
“[The motivation is] wanting to win, to make history,” he said. “You have to make history in soccer, the good kind. So you have to prepare yourself.
"I have players that are going to demand a lot from me and, God willing, we can start tomorrow by winning a championship.”
Cruz Azul test
Standing in the way of González’s dream start to life in Miami are Cruz Azul, the reigning LIGA MX Clausura and Campeón de Campeones winners. La Máquina are also no strangers to the international stage, capturing a joint-record seven Concacaf Champions Cups, most recently in 2025.
“It’s a final for us. It’s a very important trophy,” Suárez said about Wednesday’s winner-take-all clash. “We deserve it because we won MLS [Cup] last year. Cruz Azul had their own merits in Mexico, and both teams are going to play it like a final.”
For Suárez, the arrival of González as the club’s permanent replacement for Javier Mascherano provides the necessary spark for a team that not only aspires to win Campeones Cup, but also make a deep run in the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The Herons, currently second in the Eastern Conference, are looking to become the first back-to-back league champions since the LA Galaxy in 2011-12.
But first, they've got another piece of silverware to contend for.
“A new coach comes in with a lot of enthusiasm and adrenaline; a lot of excitement and positive energy,” said Suárez. “And that helps us a lot. He [González] conveyed that to us today [in training], and it stuck with us.
“After what he told us today, we all want to play the final tomorrow.”
