It’s a debate that’s been raging for a few months now — who is the best player in Concacaf?
Pundits have sounded off, with some giving the nod to US men’s national team star Christian Pulisic of Chelsea, others tout El Tri standouts Raul Jimenez of Wolves or Chucky Lozano, who competes for Napoli in Serie A.
But after his latest dominant performance for Bayern Munich, Alphonso Davies might have put the debate to rest.
The Canadian international and former Vancouver Whitecaps star had a goal and an assist in Bayern’s 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt Saturday to maintain the squad’s lead atop the Bundesliga.
That’s led to two prominent former players turned analysts to tout the 19-year-old the region’s best of the best.
“I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there that may disagree and have other players in Concacaf,” Alexi Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “But I’m hard-pressed to find one right now that is a legitimate competitor other than possibly Christian Pulisic.”
Lalas added a wrinkle to the argument, saying while Davies is excelling at left back for Bayern — and may well be the best player in that position in the world at this point — it’s not necessarily where he suits up for Canada, where he’s not surrounded by as star-studded a squad.
ESPN’s Taylor Twellman also chimed in and said the debate isn’t a debate.
