Canada Soccer announced on Wednesday that forward Jonathan David has been selected 2019 Canadian Male Player of the Year.
David scored eight goals for the Canadian national team in 2019, tying a record, and set the scoring record for Canadians at the Concacaf Gold Cup with six goals in that tournament this year.
Playing club soccer at Belgian outfit KAA Gent, David scored 20 goals and 12 assists from January-November. Combined club and country, he is Canada's highest scorer in a calendar year in the last 20 years.
“Jonathan David is a great role model for young players because humility and talent is always a great combination,” said CanMNT head coach John Herdman in a program statement. “He’s always made himself available to represent his country and he has delivered with performances and goals. We are proud to have Jonathan David as one of our own and pleased his hard work has received recognition.”
The 19-year-old beat out last year's winner Alphonso Davies and top-five finishers Scott Arfield, Jonathan Osorio and Mark-Anthony Kaye. The year-end awards were voted on by a panel of Canadian media members and Canadian coaches. David joins Toronto FC academy player Jayden Nelson, who was honored this week as the 2019 Canadian Youth International Player of the Year.
