Leeds United are atop the English Championship and they have a former Major League Soccer standout to thank for that.
Jack Harrison, who started his professional career with New York City FC, struck for the 87th-minute winner in a 1-0 victory over host Reading at the Madejski Stadiums, his third goal in four games.
The 23-year-old winger headed in a Helder Costa cross to secure Leeds’ fourth consecutive victory which moves them one point ahead of West Brom — who play tomorrow — in the Championship.
Harrison, who came to Leeds on loan from Manchester City after a transfer from NYCFC in Jan. 2018, has been red-hot this season. The former No. 1 selection in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft has three goals in his club’s last four matches — all wins.
Harrison’s influence goes beyond this recent run of good form.
Elsewhere in the Championship, USMNT defender Tim Ream helped lead Fulham up to third following a 3-0 victory over Derby County Tuesday at Craven Cottage. It was the third consecutive victory for the Cottagers, who moved ahead of Preston North End.
While Ream went the distance in Fulham’s second clean sheet in three wins, Duane Holmes had a 77-minute stint for Derby County.
Also on Tuesday, It was another UEFA Champions League start for ex-Vancouver Whitecaps star Alphonso Davies at left back in Bayern Munich’s 6-0 blasting of Crvena Zvezda in Group B.
In net for Red Star was Canadian international Milan Bojan, making it the first time two CanMNT players squared off against each other in the Champions League.
